Anisur Rahman Milon

After the theatre classes at Dhanmondi road 8, a particular group of aspiring theatre activists used to spend time gossiping, while enjoying cups of tea and biscuits at Boshir’s tea stall at Kalabagan. When anyone in the group was frustrated about his or her future, or career, as is very common among struggling theatre activists, the rest of the group tried to cheer him or her up through the dialogue of a drama: ‘Fagun mash ashle dekhsene kaj kore furote parbeneane’ (when the good times come, there will be so many offers that you won’t find the time to do all of them).

A busy and popular actor of the television at present, Anisur Rahman Milon, was a member of this group. It can be said that Milon is currently passing the fagun mash of his career as prophesised by his friends so many years before. ‘During my busy schedules from time to time, I usually recall the dialogue,’ says Milon. ‘Other group members of our ‘‘adda’’ like Shoib, Rawnok, Suman Anwar and so on, are also established in the television media now,’ adds Milon.

This ‘good time’, has however, come to Milon’s life after much sacrifice and struggle. ‘Many a times, there were directors who had cast me and even handed me the scripts, only to take it away from me later with the excuse that the television channels want some known celebrities to do the roles in the dramas,’ reveals Milon. ‘This was essential so that they could sell the drama to the channels at a high price,’ he adds.

Even without the looks or the ‘hero’ image, Milon has made his career strong through sincere acting. He is still appreciated for his performance as Major Kamal in a drama called Bela Bhumi. Even after four years, people know Milon as Major Kamal.

In yet another drama, called ‘Modhu Moira’, Modhu is slapped by an influential man of the village when he disobeys him. Eventually, the man seeks Modhu’s forgiveness as his dying father wants to have sweets baked by Modhu Moira only. People appreciated Milon’s involvement, acting and understanding of the Modhu Moira character in the drama. He even received the Meril Prothom Alo award for his performance in the drama in 2006.

‘People still remember me through those performances and that is more important to me than any award,’ he says. ‘I feel very proud when people ask me “are you?” or “Modhu Moira”,’ he says.

Milon feels that his theatre background has helped his career a lot. ‘Of course, performance, combined with integrity, sincerity and hard work ensures success,’ he says. ‘But the theatre background provides actors with the confidence required to perform different roles,’ says Milon, who has been involved in theatre since his days as a student of class six.

At that tender age, Milon joined the children theatre group ‘Artonad’ and was involved in theatre throughout his student life. After his graduation and Masters in Social Welfare from Dhaka College, Milon joined the organisation ‘Democracy Watch’ as a project officer.

Despite having a fulltime job, he did not abandon his passion for acting and was still involved with theatre. ‘There was, however, a one and a half year-long gap when I could not manage any time for theatre,’ says Milon. After a while, he left the job and made himself available for performing in television dramas only.

‘This was a very crucial decision in my life and in the beginning, I did not get any calls from any director,’ he says. ‘It did upset me as not finding much footing in the media industry meant big trouble for me,’ he adds.

During this time, a director named Rulin Rahman provided Milon a chance to perform in the drama ‘Akay’. ‘This was my first break on television,’ he says. ‘I was so serious about drama that I marked the script in such a way that nothing could be read,’ he shares.

‘After performing in five dramas, there was again a gap when I had no work in my hands,’ he continues. During this time, Milon concentrated on script writing. He wrote four scripts named Ortopor, Baroyari, Somporko and Agol.

For the drama Ortopor, the director requested Milon to play a role. ‘This drama helped me prove my acting abilities to the directors and I received five drama offers, which I took and performed, following this particular performance,’ says Milon.

He then performed in the highly popular Ronger Manush serial, Doyita, Bela Bhumi, Modhu Moira, Haath Kora and so on. Milon also directed his own script Baroyari. ‘Doyita was challenging for me,’ he adds. There is an interesting story about the casting of the drama in which Noresh Da was the director, according to Milon. ‘While Noresh da was explaining the roles, his little son, who loves me very much, said that Milon da will be the hero in this drama. This influenced Noresh da and I was given the role of the protagonist in the play,’ says Milon.

Milon has also initiated his movie career. ‘Last Thakur’ was his first film. The film he is currently working on is titled Tumi ashbe bole bhalo bashbe bole. ‘This is my warm-up film,’ he says about the role. ‘People say a lot of things about our film industry. However, I strongly believe that in order to introduce our country to the world in a door to door level, cinema and sports are the best mediums,’ he explains.

‘You know West Indies for their cricket or the world know India through their films,’ he continues. ‘So I want to concentrate more on films, although it is true that there are many irregularities in the Bangladeshi film industry. But I believe everything will be all right in the long run,’ he adds.

Milon has three siblings. His younger brother is a network engineer while his two sisters are married and live in Dhaka. Milon’s father, Nurur Rahman, died just three years ago. His mother, Payera Begum, is a house wife. Milon is married to Lucy, a theatre activist herself, who did her Masters in drama and dramatics from Jahangirnagar University.

Every year, on December 31, Milon makes a resolution for the next year. ‘On this day, I try to judge my year-long performance through the roles that are distinctively remembered by the audience,’ he says. ‘Of course, this year my plan will be to concentrate more on my work and to find some quality roles. I do not want brief popularity but rather want to be remembered by people for my sincere and hard work. And I always like to cross my abilities’ threshold,’ he concludes.

Subarna Mustafa

Renowned TV and film actress Subarna Mustafa talked to the Cultural Correspondent about a variety of issues–personal and professional. Excerpts from the interview

What do you fear most?
Sometimes, a feeling of dread grasps me, regarding my loved ones and the uncertainties they might go through in future. Other than that, I fear nothing- except maybe cockroaches!

What is the one thing that you expect your loved ones to give you?
That’s very simple- love itself of course!

How old were you when you first fell in love?
I was just 13 years old, when I fell madly in love with Roger Moore, after watching the movie Saint.

What do you do during your leisure time?
When I am not shooting or working, I usually stay home. I watch movies, listen to a lot of music, especially instrumentals. I also listen to songs of Rabindranath. Lata Mangeshkar and AR Rahman are my favourites too. However, I believe that what I do during my leisure time is a big contribution towards enrichment of my knowledge.

If you suddenly discover that you have lost all your recognition and popularity, what would you do?
I would be devastated of course. I work for the people and the appreciation and recognition that I get from them are what I am grateful for. Many artistes might claim that they do not view or consider recognition, as an important element of their career, which I think, is completely misleading.

Movies which you would never stop enjoying?
Pather Panchali, Gone with the Wind, ET and a few more.

Books which you would never tire of reading..
Definitely Galpo Guchho by Rabindranath Tagore. I have a copy of the book on my desk all the time.

Are you satisfied with your life and career?
Of course I am satisfied. You see, we live in a country where many people live under the poverty line. By the grace of God, I have a chance to work for my living and I know that there are many people out there who love me. That’s all that I need right now.

Tazin Ahmed

Versatility could very well be Tazin Ahmed’s middle name. She is a multi-tasking celebrity who has made her mark in many fields – ranging from performances in the theatre and small screen, as a journalist, playwright, TV anchor and director.

Tazin grew up in a cultural environment with a strong belief that hard work and dedication would enable her to create a niche for herself, which she successfully did with her down to earth attitude and exceptional acting chops.

Tazin completed her HSC in 1992 and in 1994 joined the daily Bhorer Kagoj. In 1997 she took up a job with Prothom Alo and became a staff reporter in 1998. She was also a columnist for Anondo Bhubon and a freelance contributor to Bangla Bazar. In 2002, she joined Mercantile Bank as a public relations officer. One year later she took up the mantle of programme executive with ntv. She staged her entry on the small screen in 1996. Alongside she became associated with theatre troupe Natyojon. In 2000 she joined Aronyak and is still a member of the troupe.

Eventually the load got to her and in 2004 she decided to focus on acting and writing. To date Tazin has scripted around 12 plays and directed a few as well. Commenting on her role as director she says, “Directing a few plays does not make one a professional and I’m not comfortable when termed as one.”

Talking about her current work, Tazin says, “I’m starring in a daily soap called ‘The Family’ which will be on air soon. The story is about an extended family. Another 26-episode serial titled “O Bondhu Amar,” directed by Hiru Khan and written by Imdadul Haque Milon, will be aired soon.”

On her future plans, she says, “It’s very hard to plan when you are a media professional. You are bound to be frustrated if things don’t go according to plan. I feel that the TV channels and the media should change their perspective. Instead of going in for the narrow circle of sponsors, the channels should concentrate on quality. Only then will we have good writers, actors, directors and anchors.”

Whether it is writing, acting or anchoring, the vivacious Tazin knows to give it her best shot each time. No wonder she has a firm position in the hearts of her fans.

Banna Mirza Interview eXclusive

Banna Mirza Interview eXclusive

Eid brings in a festive air. After a month of fasting, everyone tries to make this occasion a little more special. How do celebrities celebrate the occasion? What do they think of this day? A familiar face on the small screen, Bonya Mirza, shares her thoughts.“When I was a child, Eid meant freedom to me. I grew up in a conservative family and there were lots of dos and don’ts for the children. I was never allowed to go anywhere or play around. But on Eid, there was no restriction. It was three days of unlimited fun,” says Banna.

Growing up in a small town in Kushtia, Banna had the opportunity to enjoy the community-based culture. “I think, every festival attains its proper mood when it becomes universal. In this regard, I truly enjoy the Bengali New Year. On Eid, the whole community becomes one big family. That is one of the things I cherished. My childhood memories of Eid consist of fond experiences shared with others. Waking up early in the morning, putting on brand new cloths, I would go visit almost every house in our paara and play with the children. When the day ended, I felt like crying, thinking why must all good things end abruptly? Now living in an apartment complex, I miss those days. People in the metro areas hardly bother about their neighbours. It’s frustrating,” she says.

“We waited eagerly for Eid because it was only time of the years when we made new clothes. Now as my profession demands new clothes often, I don’t specifically wait for Eid to shop.”

A trait inherited from her family, Banna Mirza thinks a lot about the prevailing social injustice and inequality. “Eid is a time for celebration but shouldn’t everyone be entitled to it? People are struggling to cope with the ongoing price hike; the recent disastrous flood has left so many homeless. Is a grand celebration really the right thing to do? I think a better way to celebrate Eid would be donating some of the money, intended for buying expensive new clothes and other items, to the people who desperately need our help. Then it would be a universal celebration.”

The sensitive actress also expresses her concern about the fishermen who did not come back after the recent storms in the Bay of Bengal. “What will these families do this Eid? But I know life goes on. Even a rickshaw-puller will celebrate Eid in his own way. My mother will definitely cook some special dishes and I will spend the day with my family.”

Tisha - A talented Artist

Tisha - A talented Artist

Tisha is the name of one of the most popular and talented artists of small screen of the contempo¬rary time. This talented artist has spent some of her childhood times in Rajshahi, then she came to Dhaka and took admission in Viqarunnisa Noon School in class-IV. After completing her school and college from there she is now studying in ‘North South University’.

Tisha’s father inspired her to enter into the cultural world. Tisha was the “Notun Kuri 1995″ Champion as she became first all in a row in dancing, singing, acting and in story telling. Tisha was also one of the founder members of a band group named “Angel”. But after the grand success of the advertisement of CocaCola, City Cell and Keya beauty soap her life turned to a new direction and now Tisha has accepted modeling and acting as profession. Though she has decided to work in the modeling and acting sector, she would never withdraw herself from singing as it is an integral part of Tisha. She still sings in several of her family gatherings.

Tisha maintains a very busy schedule including classes and shootings. Her mother is very cooperative about her works. Tisha shares everything with her mother. Tisha said that Tisha’s mother takes care of everything including her makeup, dress up and hairstyle. Tisha thinks that all these were not possible if her mother was not with her. Tisha feels very much confident if her mother stays with her and can concentrate solely on acting and that gives her good work. Tisha hardly gets time to spend with her classmates but still Tisha maintains a very friendly relation with all her classmates. She gets maximum number of phone calls and SMS from her class mates when any of her drama is shown in the TV. Tisha prefers to spend her leisure time by sleeping at home, listening to music and by decorating her house. Sometimes she goes for shopping with her mother to buy perfume, bag or music CD. In future Tisha aims to go a long way and wants to continue studies with acting. We wish her all the best to reach the targets.

Piritir Dokandari

Piritir Dokandari

After finishing it’s shooting in Sonargaon, Pubail and Savar the movie Piriter Dokandari is now shooting on a location in sector four of Uttara.

At first we observed a doctor and some nurses roaming around but later we found out that they all were acting in this very film. Later, we met the director of the film P A Kajol.

This is his 25th film and after the success of Hridi Talkies’ Ek Takar Bou and Praner Shami, this is his third production. The director believes that the viewers will like this film because it is a bit different as it talks about family and social problems.

The director also said that Nayok Raj Razzak’s acting in this movie was very soul touching and Shabana played a role where she talked in Noakhalis’ dialect. After almost more than 12 years, the two undisputed queen of Bengali music, Sabina Yasmeen and Runa Laila, sang together in the music of Shawkat Ali Emon.

Mr. N M Alamgir, the main assistant director, said that 70 percent shooting is almost completed. Bindu, Emon, Miju Ahmed, Kabila and child artist Dighi has also acted in this film.

Api Karim

Api Karim’s second movie

Api Karim’s second movie

In her ten years long career, Api Karim had only acted in one cinema. Six years ago, back in 2003 she acted in the movie “Bachelor” produced by Mustafa Sarwar Farooki, and her different character got her awards that year.

Even though she was swept away with the round of appreciation due to her performance in that movie, she wasn’t seen in any other film after that. But after 2003, her era of no-film has finally come to an end again. Salauddin Labhlu’s second movie Warish will be her second movie that she will be acting in.

This news was brought to us by Salauddin Lavlu himself. Famous for ‘Molla Barir Bou’, Salauddin Lavlu said, “It was decided long before who will be the ones acting in ‘Warish’- only the actress was remaining. It is no question about why I chose Opi to act in this movie. There is nothing new to say about her acting abilities. I hope Api can bring about her best acting in my cinema. I took her in my film hoping just that.”

The only thing left to see now is how Api is valued by her audience.

Apu Biswas

Apu Biswas

Apu Biswas

What is the meaning of life? Every mind will have a different answer. To me the meaning of life is to give joy to others for as long as I live. May be that is where the success of my life lies. At least that is what I think. Being in the film industry I think the meaning of life can be found in films. May be unconsciously I have started to entertain others.

My hometown is in Bagura. From my childhood I was involved in cultural activities. In middle school I would participate in dancing. Although my family was against it, my mom was my inspiration. Today I am Opu Biswash because of her encouragement and help. And of course I had the prayers and love of fans.

In some party I met with the talented actor/director Shuvash Datta. He offered me to act in his film ‘O amar chele’. Before I could finish that movie I got an offer to act in Amzad Hossain’s film ‘Kal shokale’. I did not have a big part in these two films but it helped my career. After that I worked in place of Dipjol in 2006 in ‘Chachu’, Pitar ashon’, Dadima’, ‘Koti takar kabin’. The rest of the story is known to all.

I have not been in the film industry for long but I had to face many problems. Most of it was bitter. Our industry does not welcome the new ones. That was my first experience. I stood on the station from morning to evening in shooting. I was new so I had nowhere to sit. But the others who were not new comers had a sitting arrangement. If this indifference continues then our films cannot improve. Other than this there is jealousy. Competition is good but jealousy is not acceptable. And some of our reporters play along with this. At the beginning of my career some of the artists were conspiring against me. But I survived by the love of my audience. It is true that the true value of an actor depends on his audience. The reporters in electronic and print media all are bias. The reporters are the conscious of the citizens. Why will they be bias? Thus my request to the reporters is that they only bring out the truth to the readers. They are the symbol of honesty.

The present film industry has crossed a dark time and now is waiting for golden days. But still there are not many good directors except few in our country. And the producers and directors only think of the commercial profit which is why we do not find good movies despite our wishes. So the people of the this country have no choice other than to chose bollywood, Hollywood. There is also scarcity of good story writers in our country. During acting I came to see that it’s the same dialogues over and over again. They just wrote a story to earn money. But now the audience does not accept these movies. And the entire fault falls on the producers and directors. This system should change. We have to remember that our audience wants to know more and learn more from our films.

Today all the prices are increasing in a geometric progression except the budget of our producers. I have heard it many times during shooting that a producer is saying ‘could not shoot a good scene due to the short budget’. In school a teacher once told me ‘one can never succeed with loads of tension’. I think that if the mentioned problems are solved then the quality of our films will improve. I have not been here for long but I had the opportunity to work with many super stars. Once upon a time I would dream about them and today I am sometimes their daughter and sometimes daughter in law. I enjoy this very much. Those who once upon a time made great movies have now stepped out, some from agitation and some for negligence. Now is the time to rebuild our films. And that requires the experienced artists. Only they can revive the films of dhalliwood.

During shooting these artists unconsciously express their agitation. Most of them complained ‘as long as I was able to give to them we were valuable. If I am done today no one will look for me tomorrow’. This is only seen in our country. If we look at bollywood we will see that in all the functions the aged, experienced and retired artists are valued the most. The people of the film industry need to have a change of heart.

My only wish is to have a place in the hearts of my audience. Thus I did a commercial with Nobel for the viewers of drawing room. Now people recognize me. This was positive for me. But the producers like Humayon Ahmed, Mostofa Sorowar Faruqui, Tanvir Mokammel, Morshedul Islam and Giasuddin Selim do not work with the artists of FDC. I don’t know the reason for that. But I would say that they should also work with commercial artists like us. Nowadays there are two types of films. Main stream and alternate stream. If the artists of commercial films could work on their films then there would not be this division.

In our media most of the high ranking officials hardly know anything about cinema. It’s the same thing for most of the editors. If this kind of relationship changes I believe our entertainment will definitely improve.

I have made some plans from the beginning of this year. I want to reach a strong point in film and thus the pre- planning. I will try not to make the same mistakes that were once made.

I have many wishes. I had a sky full of dreams when I entered the film industry. These dreams are coming true one by one. I was a simple girl from Bagura and now I am a film actress. So I believe that my sky full of dreams will one day come true.

Apu Biswas

Apu Biswas

In first 6 months of this year 7 out of 8 released movies acted by Apu became popular. In last decade no other actress from new generation got popularity like her in Bangla movie. That is why she is in a assured stage in professional life.

Apu Biswas is the actress of most commercial successful movies in last six months. Even two years back there were 4 to 5 actress in the film industry. Although Moushumi reduced acting, Purnima became busier with dramas after marriage. Poppy has fewer movies in her hand. Only Shabnur’s movies do good business once in a while.

After this only Apu Biswas depicts success. Apu said in her natural manner, “actually my professionalism played the biggest part behind my consistency, because I am not aware of messing up any director’s schedule. I don’t think about what others do. What I do is the matter to see. I am busy with keeping my fitness after shooting day and night.”

Opu is now shooting at Cox’s Bazar. Apu will stay outside of Dhaka for one more week to shoot the movie ‘Hakim Nore To Hukum Norena’ directed by F. I. Manik. She will go to Bangkok next month.

During this Eid, she will be seen in around half a dozen movies. She is tensed about release of lots of movies simultaneously. As this tends to push producers into business risk. And Apu does not like this either.

She said, “I am not in support of releasing several movies together, because films do not do business. And blame falls on shoulders of actors-actresses.”

Like success of Apu, she also got herself into controversy in different occasions. But still she has no problem leaving all that controversy behind and moving ahead consistently.

Regarding this Apu said, “My success came in short time compared to others. That’s why whenever little fault of mine is found everybody starts condemning me. In coming days viewers will get to see me in better roles. I am waiting for days when my expectations would be fulfilled. I know I can do it. I have to do it.”

For last two years Apu’s ship of success docked in a green island. There is a lot of similarity of her changed life with the girl of green island. Movie experts think that for next two years Apu’s career will go higher.

Monpura’s 100 days

Monpura’s 100 days

With piles of doubts in head on 13th February acclaimed actor-director Giasuddin Salim’s first film ‘Monpura’ was released. As this film was made with small screen actors many movie specialists thought it wouldn’t be able to attract audience. But that opinion was crushed on the first week of movie’s release.

Salim’s creative style, Bangla romantic story and strong organizational work after release got ‘Monpura’ to cross over last 25 years of movie success history. It’s been 100 days since Monpura’s continuous success countrywide from day one of its release. So naturally its creator will be happy about all this.

How do you feel about exactly 100 days of success? Salim says, of course I am happy. There is no reason to be sad. But it is true that there is a lot of pressure, day after day hall owners from distant corners of country come asking for Monpura.

I have to discuss with them, have to buy and sell, still giving every effort to prevent piracy, and also slowly getting familiar with this new world called film. I am learning a lot, because drama was a really known place like my family.

And movie means all of Bangladesh. As in I am going across one Bangladesh with Monpura. It is a really hard work that cannot be expressed with words. And about the feeling of completing 100 days I would say this much, when I started making the film since then I had a plan and dream that country’s hall averse people would again come back to halls together.

Perhaps everybody dreams of this, especially the ones who made or are making new movies. I got to grasp dream in last 100 days. I believe that Monpura will pursue more 500 cinema halls of the country in next 200 days. It has only been 200 halls.

It is not a dream, I can clearly see it. In the meantime besides planning for Monpura’s 200 days Giazuddin Salim started to work on a new movie. After unexpected sky high success of first movie Salim’s plans regarding new movie are shaping into unimaginable form. It has been said that possible name of the movie is ‘Kajol Rekha’.

On the matter Salim informed, the story of the movie is complete. But before finalizing its name and actors, he completely refused to open his mouth about it. After Monpura with whom and what kind of movie will this creator make- to satisfy the mass curiosity about this in media and viewers some possible information has been given.

But in the movie this couple will appear more like guest roles. With loads of confidence from first movie this creator is going ahead with an unimaginable arrangement for his second movie; the shooting of which will start from the beginning of next year.

After finishing it’s shooting in Sonargaon, Pubail and Savar the movie Piriter Dokandari is now shooting on a location in sector four of Uttara.

A new Eva Rahman

A new Eva Rahman

In her 5 year career 10 albums got released. She also sang in plays and movies. She sang to Bappi Lahiri’s tuned and composed Hindi song. In the end her 10th album was released called “Moner Na Bola Kotha” in Ayub Bacchu’s tune and composition.

Five years ago her journey started with album “Moner Chotto Ghore”

Tenth album “Moner Na Bola Kotha” got released. What is the experience this time?

It feels really good. I am continuously learning, trying to perfect classical. I started my journey with music director Mannan Mohammad. Gradually I earned the experience of working with Rajesh, S. I. Tutul , Ayub Bacchu. In between I sang to the tune of renowned music director of subcontinent Bappi Lahiri. Working with different music director I got the opportunity to learn a lot.

Tell us something about “Moner Na Bola Kotha” in Ayub Bacchu’s tune and music.

Every song of this album really matches with the title. Whatever I could not say or do in previous nine albums, it was possible here. Ten songs are of ten different touches. It is a matter of luck to sing to Ayub Bacchu’s tune and music. I am his fan since childhood. Working on my album was a challenge for Bacchi Bhai. He created something new selflessly. In this album fans of every type of music will find a new Eva.

Which song of the album you liked most?

In this album Bacchu Bhai gave an amazing tune. With soft background music he composed a song titled ‘Bangladesh’. The lyric of the song is ‘???? ???? ???? ?? ????? ???? ??? ??? ???? ?? ???’. The song was added in the end of documentary on Freedom Fighting directed by ATN Bangla’s Chairman. The strange thing is, the war took place in 1971. In spite of that the song blended really well with documentary in 2009.

When you started five years ago, did you think back then that tenth album will come out?

At the beginning I had no confidence. I started learning to sing since I was 5/6 years old. Did not have practice for long time. After marriage inspired by my husband ATN Chairman Dr. Mahfujur Rahman I started again; had to digest many criticisms on this. Then I took up a challenge inside. Slowly started to build myself up. The more people criticize the more I express my confidence. Now many praise my singing.

Most of the critics raise questions about your singing talent. How confident are you about yourself?

Only because I have talent it’s slowly getting expressed. If it was possible to be an artist or sing without talent then every channel owners’ wives would become artists. Since the very start severe criticisms about me have been taking place. If they listen to my tenth album then all of their criticisms will stop. I did not become an artist out of hobby. And I do not want to be an artist by competing. I sing for self satisfaction.

What sort of criticisms do you hear more?

Strange criticisms have been done about me. Why I sing with saree on, why I am not wearing modern dresses, why my songs are not telecasted in any channel except ATN, etc. Perhaps the critics do not that everything is done according to my liking.

But they do show you more in ATN.

But now you can see me less. In fact every artist’s channel is ATN. If they show me a lot then I call up and shut the transmission.

Out of ten albums in which album you were satisfied singing?

To be honest full pleasure does not come from any album. It feels like a mistake remained.

Your album “Ishq Diwana” with Bappi Lahiri’s tune and music became popular. You even sang with him on same stage. What is your feeling?

Most probably Allah is really pleased with me. I got many things without even asking. He is a human being of big quality. I was not able to sing infront of him. During recoding in Kolkata he gave me strength by saying, just imagine that everyone is family member, you are singing in the drawing room. Then I started singing comfortably.

In a year two of your solo albums come out. Is there a reason behind it?

My albums come out centered around two eids. With songs of my solo album one hour program is telecasted in two eids. The sponsor money for this program was raised to maximum of 55 lakh. And my fans look forward to these programs in two eids.

What are the albums coming out ahead?

A solo album is getting worked on with Rajesh’s tune. Moreover in Ayub Bacchu’s tune two more solo albums will come. Bacchu Bhai is taking time and working on something different.

Who do you listen to in Bangladesh?

Songs of Runa Laila, Sabina Yasmin and Samina Chowdhury are always played at my home. Sabina apa has such a voice that it does not require music. Besides that I listen to Shubir Nandi, Andrew Kishor and Lucky Akhondo.

A lot of change can be heard in your voice now. How is it possible?

This change first comes in Rajesh’s tune. Then more change comes in tunes S. I. Tutul and Ayub Bacchu. Besides I am learning something new from Ostaad Shamsul Huda. So fans will get some more improvements.

For every album you have a music video. Are you doing this by plan?

Every solo album of mine has DVD. The work on DVD is done according to my plans. Like Moner Kotha Na Bola, Ishq Diwana, Moner Tulite Aki, Montori, all these DVDs were under my plan. I enjoy doing this work.

Are you doing anything else besides singing?
I am working as a producer in ATN Bangla. I direct programs on special days. I produced a play called “Halkhata” on Boishakh. A series program on Kazi Nazrul is run on ATN. I am enjoying these works

Fahmida Nabi

At last together

At last together

Everybody knows that two regents of music Fahmida Nabi and Samina Chowdhury are sisters. After long time two sisters are going to work in same album.

Even though two sisters have been singing for three decades they do not have any duet album. Perhaps they did few duet songs until now. This time, fans will get these two widely renowned artists in one album.

Why after so long? Answering to this question Fahmida Nabi said, ‘maybe because no production company took any initiative for so long. So this time we two sisters are going to bring out album by ourselves. Besides I was abroad for many years, for this reason also we have not worked in any album together.’

It came to knowledge this album is financed by world music, an audio production company owned by Samina Chowdhury’s husband, Ejaj Khan Swapan. Samina Chowdury said, I have been thinking of making such album for some time. The main thing is that at last the dream will be fulfilled.

Tune and music direction is taken care by Prince Mahmud and Bappa Majumdar. There is no need to introduce either Prince or Bappa. By now both of them managed to create original trend in the country. That is why it will not be a mistake to call this album great in advance. In total there will be 12 songs. Among those 6 songs, 3 each in Samina’ and Fahmida’s voice, will be original. Rest of the songs will be popular songs sang by two sisters in different times.

These old songs will be made with new music arrangements, informed Samina. These songs broadcasted in BTV are ‘Amaar Shob Shukhe Bubu’, Tomari Naam Shuvro’, ‘Chikichita’ etc.

Daughters of talented artist Mahmudunnabi, Fahmida Nabi and Samina Chowdhury are two among the artists, who presently practice genuine singing. Not only that, both of them played leading roles in enriching Bangla music. Right now both of them are at the peak of popularity.

Fahmida Nabi informed that work on music tracks of this untitled album is ongoing. After the work of music track is done, voice recording will start. It is assumed that if the work is completed within specified time then in coming Ramadan Eid this album will be marketed under the banner of production company world music.

Farah Ruma

“I have seen a great deal and gained a lot of experience. Along the way I have learnt that the world is not so easy as I once perceived it. Gone are those days of innocence when I used to trust everyone and believe whatever I was told. Now I am more in touch with reality,” said actress-model Farah Ruma, sitting back in her couch and gazing into the distance.

Farah Ruma

Farah Ruma

Beginning with the telefilm “Shako” on Channel i, this multifaceted actress needs no further introduction. She currently appears in two dramas. Other than that she had done numerous tele-films, plays, TVCs and so on. “There was a time when advertisements were model-oriented, but now the pattern has changed. Today it’s theme based and there is very little scope as the image is a deciding factor and may not always suit me. So I have drifted away a bit from that industry,” Ruma says.

“Kacher Putu,” (aired on Channel 1) written by Nima Rahman and directed by Ashraful Haque Pipu, is a story entwined around the life of two friends, enacted by Ruma and Mousumi Biswas. The duo, who share much in common from their very childhood, both fall for a guy. “14th May @” is a story with a twist. The e-mail addresses of a boy Namir and a girl Zara are the same, 14May@… Subsequently they become online friends. At length, when the girl’s marriage is arranged with someone else, they realise they are in love with each other. They wish they could go five years back and, surprisingly, they wake up one day to find that they really are five years back in time. Ruma plays the character of Zara here. Ruma is one of the judges of the talent hunt, “Lux-Channel i Super Star 2009″. She also has some plays coming up like “Jolkona” on ATN Bangla, and “Asharey Golpo” on ntv.

A quick peak at the life and interests of Farah Ruma:

Favourite movies: “The Pursuit of Happyness,” “Titanic”.

Favourite songs: Love all Bangla songs. At this moment, Hridoy Khan’s songs.

Favourite pastimes: Travelling, spending time with my family.

Favourite books: Science fiction, particularly, Zafar Iqbal’s stories.

Favourite brands: Giordano. I also go for traditional wear from my elder sister’s boutique Jundub Creation, where I usually get my shalwar-kameez, which are both simple and elegant. Let me also add that the material is very important to me.

Dreams: To travel to other countries, which I have not yet visited. To see the pyramids of Egypt and the art of France, among others.

What did you do on Eid: Had two Eids, as I was in Qatar on Eid day but came back home at 10 pm because I was keen to spend time with my family. Few words: I want to be remembered as an adept actress, a responsible daughter, a loving sister, wife, friend… I want success in every sphere of my life.

Farhana Mili

Mili has probably played the best in her short acting carrer. At least the success of Monpura is the evidence of that. As Pori is the central character of the Monpura, so the success of it has to do with the perfect acting of Pori or Mili. And this is what is agreed upon by the director and the audience. How does the actress feel when her first movie was realized? Mili smile a bit, listening to this question. As if somewhat different feeling is lying hidden, inside her smile. Afterwards she said,” Its inexplicable through speech.

Farhana Mili

Farhana Mili

A mysterious experience, of course a good one. It feels that all the hopes and aspiration are in that feeling. If I say it feels good only, it will never express my entire feeling. I can only feel this in my heart. And I believe those who have already watched or be watching this movie can share my feeling.” On listening to the question, how did you feel when you saw yourself in the big screen? Mili said,”When the footage of Monpura came from Chennai, I could not believe that it’s me.” Lot of people said the character of Pori has superseded strongly over Farhana Mili. And this issue has stirred me a lot.

On the very first day when Monpura was released Mili watched the movie in three different halls. She watched the entire movie sitting in a normal rear stall gallery. I was trying to watch the movie attentively. But every time my attention was shifting to the audience’s eyes. How they are taking it and what was their reaction? Everybody was very nervous in our unit; this is how she described her experience in the cine-halls. The total unit along with me was very surprised to see the audience reception. At last, we understood that we really did something. The audiences at Balaka enjoyed the movie, we heard praising from everybody. Lot of well wishers wished through phone.

Farhana Mili

Coming to the Star Cineplex, I saw it was also housefull. And appreciations were coming out of the Star Cineplex, I went to the Obhishar Cinema Hall; I was surprised looking at the long queue at the ticket counter. The thing which I have enjoyed the most is that…despite the difference of the audience of Cineplex and Obhishar, interestingly all of them accepted the movie in the same way. And it means Monpura is a movie which will appeal to all classes of audience. This is how Mili described ger feelings and experience to Stardom.

“Monpura” is successful. Now what is next?” smiling Mili says,” I got the reward of my long hard work and patience. Now give me a break for a few days. Actually I don’t want to go with the main stream. I only want, what I will do, the audience should enjoy. I don’t want to do many movies. But what I will do, it will be a whole hearted effort. and of course I need blessings from every of my viewers.

Monpura is one of the most successful films in country’s history. Director Giazuddin Salim chose Farhana Mili as leading actress. He hit the jackpot with her debut movie. She did not even think that she would be so successful. Presently she is shooting in the drama directed by Tarik Anam.

Written by Aminul Islam created for BTV this is a public awareness play. Before this she acted in the lead role in play based on short story ‘Bubu’ written by Akhtaruzzaman Ilias Ramiz. She has some more plays in her hand. But she is not doing any new movies at the moment.

Then did Monpura fail to convey the message to commercial film world- replying to question like this Mili said, I do not understand all these but offers for some movies came. As they were not ideal I rejected the offers. Born in Nawabganj Mili grew up among wind and light of old Dhaka’s Nawabpur.

She passed her SSC in science division from Banglabazar government girls’ high school and then HSC from Mahanagar Women’s College. And then honors in drama from Jahangirnagar University. Her only brother is her classmate in same department. Mili wants to make her place in viewer’s heart with varieties of roles.

Mili believes that with good story and filmmaking through Bangla Cinema viewers can be brought back to halls. Mili can obviously say that. Since Monpura proved that. She replied to questions about marriage as if it is asked frequently, time to think about all these still hasn’t come.

Fatema Binte Rhaman: Those who were LUX superstars before, most of them had a particular trend or style to carry off themselves. But nowadays we are amazed to see one or two of the superstars.

One advertisement particularly grabs the attention. I am talking about a recent advertisement of Badhon.

In my view, after being a LUX superstar, you need to be within a particular fashion trend acceptable to all. Initially I was in favor of Badhon so that she becomes LUX superstar, but why she did not become superstar was apparent later on. She was caught in theft in Bangkok, as well as she had an illicit relationship with one of the Channel staff- all these news being published about her made me wonder about her integrity. How can aperson lose her image so well in such a small time? The same proof I got from one of her advertisements. Director Farooki probably wanted a total commercial advertisement. But because of this, should a LUX star work for a debilitating advertisement in exchange for money?

At the same time, I will say that only for the sales of your newspaper, do not let go of your paper’s integrity. Do not try to say a debilitating advert as good. All these time, Mostafa Sarwar Farooki produced many such dramas like ‘Baba bole gelo’ and ‘First Date’. All these have put his other good work’s reputation in jeopardy. It is difficult to accept a star’s reputation on the line in everyday life.

I have a question for Badhon. Where will you develop your career at? Do you want to get down while hosting a show? Or do you want to come in the newspapers for all the wrong reasons like getting cut off from a Cinema.

We used to be insired by the works of LUX superstars. They have an image to hold up. But you? And because of people like you now I myself have to think twice before enrolling for such a competition. Just for your behavior, not everyone should be put to shame. You do not have that right. I have to ask you – Ask yourself why you did this and whether you want to be a controversial model and do controversial works. Why don’t you try for good scripts, then we will be inspired too. You will also promote LUX itself.

Her favorite personality is her teacher Pradhan Sharkar of anatomy department. She goes shopping and outing whenever she gets the chance. Her favorite writer is Humayon Ahmed, favorite play is ‘Kothao keu nai’. Her childhood was spent mostly studying. She did not have much to do with cultural functions. Participating in the Lux Channel eye super star contest was all from her own interest. Her unparallel acting got her easily to the top ten. At last she became the second runner up. This was a new turn in her life. She was then called to act on a play of Humayon Ahmed. Then one by one she started working with others and thus began her glamorous life. But mostly she became quite famous from Humayon Ahmed’s film. Although she started from the competition now she is a complete actress. One by one she is acting on many plays .She has received many modeling offers after her role in the commercial of Warid welcome tunes. But she is selective about her work. She has acted in several package plays and serials. -I did not receive any good offers.

It is said that stage is the place to learn acting. You have no such experience. Did you feel for it while working in TV media?

-Yes I felt the lack of experience because I did not know about the grammar of acting. At first I would act without understanding. Then I felt that stage is the place to learn the grammar of acting.

In plays which do you emphasize on more?

How you take preparation for acting?
-First I go through the script. Then I analyze my character on how I can flourish my character in the play

Which type of characters fit you?

-I can fit myself in all any type of characters.

Which of your plays gave you much satisfaction?

-I would say Bua Bilash, Atopor Shuvo Bibaho by Humayon Ahmed.

How you feel when someone criticizes your acting?

-I feel good.

Whose acting you do you enjoy most of this generation?

-Prova, Momo, Sajal, Apurba, Shimu attacts me most.

How you spend your leisure?

-I go for outing and do shopping.

What do you think are your laggings?

-I am very much emotional, truthful and can mingle well with everyone. My negative side is that, I am bitter and get angry easily.

Who inspired you to come to media?

-It was my own interest.

Tell us about a character which touched your heart?

Ferdous Wahid

Sunday was the Father’s day. Banglavision invited two top celebrities- Ferdous Wahid and Habib (his son) to the show Amar Ami. Munmun is the host of the show. Ferdous Wahid was talking about it.

Which topic was the prime topic of your discussions today?

Definitely the relationship between father and son. Previously the dads used to stay away from their sons, but now the situation is different. Now they can discuss about anything freely. Because of this a complicated task can be completed very easily

Since both of you are singers, you must have sung some songs too?

I sung Habib’s song in the show. Habib sand with me too. At our times we had all acousic musical instruments. And now its era of digital music. We have talked about the pros and cons of it. If you have noticed this, previously out of ten singers, almost 8 were around for a long time, but now it is hard to find even one or two.

When did you sing your popular song ‘Mamunia’?

The song is almost 35 years old. The song is still popular now as it was then. I really wanted to sing a song for the kids, Mohammad Nurul Huda was a magistrate then, he agreed to write a song like this. Mamunia is a word that was added by me. Lucky Akhand gaev the music. It took us only three days to make the song.

What about the song ‘Emon ekti ma de na’?

The song is about the same age, just six months different. We wanted to do something different from the mother songs back then. Dr. Nasir Ahmed Opu wrote the song keeping it in mind. His only request was that the song should sound modern. But here the term ‘ma’ denoted the country.

Bashar in a new role

Bashar in a new role

Former national cricket captain Habibul Bashar will spring a surprise for his ardent fans, as he will be seen in a new role in the coming Eid festival.

Bashar, who has in the past thrilled the crowd with his superb batting, will now show his prowess in the field of acting as he is playing the role of a police deputy commissioner in a special telefilm to be shown during the Eid on Channel I.

He is acting in a telefilm named ‘Password’ written by child litterateur and famed television personality Faridur Reza Sagar. The other actors in the ‘Password’ are Rokeya Prachi, Hasan Masud, Pijush Bannerjee, model and cinema artist Ahona along with a number of child artists. The telefilm was shot in the Indian state of Orrissa’s Puri sea beach, and Surja Mandir and also shot at locations in Dhaka and Nawabganj. The ‘Password’ was directed by Mahbub Matin, who also wrote its script.

Bashar was first approached by Mahbub Matin to act in his telefilm. He at first showed his reluctance whether he would be able to act. Mahbub Matin managed to convince him to accept the role and in the end everyone was amazed with Bashar’s hidden acting talent. Channel I senior reporter Ehsan Mohammad encouraged him most and said that in the past he has tamed leading fast bowlers of different Test playing countries and there was no reason why he will not be able to shine as an actor. Despite that Bashar took 14 days to take his decision to act in a telefilm.

Jotika Joti, a very promising actress, was talking about her future plan to get into commercial films.

Which of your dramas are airing now in the channels?

At present five dramas are airing in different channels. In Banglavision, Alvi Ahmed’s The Family and Mohan Khan’s Shomudro Jol. In ETV, Nurul Alam’s Atiker School, in Desh TV Abdullah Rna’s Kuashar Ondhokar and in ATN Bangla the drama Box.

What is your character in the drama Box? What response are you getting from audience?

In this serial, I am an NGO worker. I have different types of experiences while working for this drama. The character is excellent. I have learnt a lot while working for it and also getting a good response. I am really happy that I can work for it.

Which dramas are awaiting release?

Nuruul Alam Atik’s Ekti Kinley Ekti Free, Dipankar Deep’s Mayer Doya Poribohon, Noresh Bhuiyan’s Nij Shokhigon, Debashish Bor’s – Ja diper bhabi and MBBS.

You had acted in movies. Do you have any future thoughts on acting for silver screen?

I had acted in Tanvir Mokammel’s Rabeya and Onimesh Aich’s Shefali movie. I have a wish of acting in full commercial movies. I want to work for good movies. I do not want to work in such movies which are written about and applauded but the audience do not go to see them. I want to work in such movies where the audience will go to the movies to watch it, to experience it and also applaud for me.

Which talented producers have you worked with so far? Who do you like working with?

I have had the pleasure of working with a lot of talented producers but amongst them Animash Aich, Nurul Alam Atik, Morshedul Islam, Dipankar Dipon, Tanvir Mokammel and Akram bhai were the ones I loved working with. They have an edge over others in the way they work.

What is the competition in your profession?

There is plenty of competition in our profession and I get a way of measuring my ability through it all. Those who have quality are the ones who will survive in the end. Without being njealous it is best if they do their own works. If you have the quality then obviously you are going to get work.

Tell us about your new works?

Tarek Anam Khan’s Surjomukhi is one serial which I am working on now as well as Sadek Siddiky’s Shobai Toh Khushi Hotey Chae. Apart from this I am still in negotiation about some new works.

Uttaradhikar

Uttaradhikar” was the first reality show in Bangladesh where celebrity contestants remained isolated for three weeks, and performed certain tasks.

“Uttaradhikar” saw 10 celebrities locked up in a luxurious palace, where cameras keep a relentless eye on their every move and record their conversations. Each participant had a different attitude, thought process, behaviour and lifestyle but required the ability to survive individually as well as a cooperative team member in order to carry on the game and come out as the winner.

Gradually, each housemate was evicted from the palace and the last contestant remaining was Shila. As part of the win, she received Tk 10,00000.

The winner talks after her return from the reality show.

What was the experience like?

Shila: Amazing! When they announced my name I could hardly believe it, as I wasn’t expecting this at all. I screamed and everyone around me screamed as well!

Interesting incidents…

Shila: There were so many. Like there was this tabiz (amulet), which only one person would get and a parrot was to decide who gets it. The bird picked up my name.

Waking up every morning during the show was unusual. We had to get up at the vibrating sound of the alarm early morning. On the whole it was a disciplined 21 days.

Was it a tough three weeks?

Shila: We couldn’t leave the house. We were completely isolated. Nobody spoke to us — the directors or even the organisers. Only there was this cook who brought our meals and we could ask for tea and such, but that was it. We could only talk to other contestants. It was like living in a fancy prison. The worst part was that I couldn’t see my daughter throughout the whole time. And there were times I wanted to quit the game and come back. There were just so many new experiences, everything was new there, and that’s the reason I signed up for it.

Has life changed since you returned?

Shila: The first few days, I wouldn’t want to go outdoors, as I got used to that life, but slowly I adjusted. And now I am back to shooting, back to work.

What are you working on now?

Shila: Several TV plays, some new serials like “Utshob” and “Manpower”.

Md Adil Hossain Nobel

Md Adil Hossain Nobel

Md Adil Hossain Nobel

Date of Birth: Saturday, 20 January 1968

Nobel is the top model in modeling industry of Bangladesh

Whether it is for a television advert or to just simply adorn the latest offering of a fashion house on hoarding boards; Adil Hossain Noble has established himself as one of the most sought-after and recognisable faces in the modelling industry.

Outside the focus of camera lenses, there are quite a few dimensions to his life, starting with his role as a successful official at a multinational company.

A lot of Noble’s time is also devoted to his family, whether it’s playing tennis with his seven-year-old son, taking the family out on weekend trips, or simply spending time with his own parents.

Adding to that, Noble confesses to having over a hundred close friends with whom, he regularly engages in addas.

So how does he manage to lead such an active life, on top of regularly maintaining shooting schedules? ‘There’s no magic involved, I’m just able to manage my time effectively enough,’ he said.

Over the last decade and a half, Noble has enjoyed a great deal of success as one of the country’s top male models but still perceives it more as a hobby rather than a career.

In fact, it was the indifference in the attitudes of a few of his cousins shown towards his work that inspired him to persist with modelling and take it as a challenge in life. And 16 years on, it has paid great dividends.

‘It was under the insistence of Naser bhai (ad maker) and his wife Tulie apa, who felt that I had a photogenic appearance, that I gave modelling a try,’ said Noble.

‘I got my first break in 1991 for a television advert of Sprite but unfortunately, it was never aired,’ he recalled.

His next opportunity came in the form of another television advert of Azad ball pen, which propelled his modelling career while later ads such as that of HRC tea only affirmed his status as a leading model. Noble though, remains philosophical about his successes so far.

‘I consider success to be something of a continuing journey rather than a destination, with each success opening the door to another.’

Noble has also acted in a number of dramas and serials and his dedication to the demands of his roles has never been more apparent than in one particular instance in the drama ‘Black November’, which was telecast on TV last Eid.

‘I was so into the emotions of my character that during one tearful scene, I actually shed real tears.’

Born in Chakaria, Cox’s Bazaar, Noble completed his primary and secondary education from Chittagong Govt High school and Chittagong College respectively, before moving to Dhaka to further his education.

Upon completing his Honours and MBA, he gladly took the opportunity to join Coats Bangladesh Ltd, a leading thread manufacturing company. This has turned out to be a ‘dream job’ for Noble who is currently working as a manager in the company.

Another side of Noble, not known to many, is his abilities as a cricketer. Having always been a good cricketer from his college days, he is currently the best player at his company, earning a number of accolades along the way in the annual cricket competitions held between companies of British origin.

And it was during the course of his work at the company where he first met his wife, Sayeeda Sajed Shampa, also a model, who came to work as an intern there before the two started growing a liking for each other.

The couple share two children, Nameera Armin and Zunain Hossain, with Noble being a big fan of his wife’s cooking, especially the desserts she prepares for him.

‘I enjoy what she prepares for me especially the Kacchi and the Thai soup although I must say that when it comes to the usual items like fish, meat or vegetables, there is nothing extraordinary in that, in terms of taste,’ he quipped.

On a personal note, Noble takes great pleasure in helping other people but there is one trait that sometimes gets the better of him.

‘I have a bad temper but I do my best to control it.’

‘I would like to carry on with what I am doing but in future, I would want to start my own business, but only after my retirement,’ he concluded.
